Vertical farming: A potential farming practice for lettuce production

چکیده
Land for agriculture is becoming limited in urban areas and the concept of vertical farming could help increase land productivity. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate potential on sunlight availability lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) production greenhouse system. The experimental design completely randomized with two different systems: Horizontal systems. Ten planting shelves including five horizontal (HS) (VS) three levels as upper (VS_U), middle (VS_M) lower (VS_L) were constructed. Two varieties, âGreen Oakâ (L. var. crispa) Cosâ longifolia), selected comparative measurement. Lettuce planted both HS VS Photosynthetically photon flux density (PPFD) continuously monitored throughout growing period. height canopy width measured weekly. Leaf fresh weight (FW) dry (DW) also evaluated. averaged PPFD values 245, 217, 158 147 μmol m-2 s-1 HS, VS_U, VS_M VS_L, respectively. Higher observed comparison VS. Values FW DW significantly higher compared In addition, plant growth occurred from while top bottom. Plant densities (24 m-2) 1.5 times than (16 m-2). Light use efficiency pointed out that (0.46 g mol-1) tended have better (0.28 mol-1).

Vertical farming increases lettuce yield per unit area compared to conventional horizontal hydroponics
Vertical farming systems (VFS) have been proposed as an engineering solution to increase productivity per unit area of cultivated land by extending crop production into the vertical dimension. To test whether this approach presents a viable alternative to horizontal crop production systems, a VFS (where plants were grown in upright cylindrical columns) was compared against a conventional horizo...

In 2050 around nine billion people will live on this planet with the bulk situated in giant cities. Considering the finiteness of resources, highly important for today’s agriculture leaves one question open: How can we guarantee food security for the citizens of tomorrow? Key technology for solving this problem could be the artificial eutrophication process triggered by the effluent from urban ...

With rising population and purchasing power, demand for food and changing consumer preferences are building pressure on our resources. Vertical Farming, which means growing food in skyscrapers, might help to solve many of these problems. The purpose of this study was to construct a Vertical Farm and thereof investigate the economic feasibility of it. In a concurrent Engineering Study initiated ...

It is a rare twenty-first century biologist who hasn’t found themselves at some point dreaming of a simpler, less administrative, more collegial time in research. For some, that dream may entail a trip back to the 1950s, when early molecular biology hooligans shook each other down for ideas in the pubs of Cambridge. But for Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the dream lies in the near future and ...
